What does MedGo do?
MedGos helps people who require medical care at home connect with healthcare professionals who can provide that care.
What's your backstory?
Luis pursued a degree in medicine at La Salle University's Ciudad Victoria Campus, where he also completed his social service at the Institute of Neurobiology. He furthered his education by earning a master's in business administration and finance from the University of Valle de México in Queretaro and studying law at the University of Ítaca.
During his medical studies, two experiences led him to his current path. Firstly, in 2013, his grandmother's Alzheimer's made it challenging for her to attend medical appointments and receive proper care. Although her insurance offered home nursing services, Luis's family lacked confidence and decided not to utilize it. This sparked Luis's idea for a platform where nurses could be rated, ensuring quality care for vulnerable populations like the elderly and infants.
Secondly, during his internship in 2017, a nursing intern introduced Luis to home healthcare. However, he found the logistics complicated. Patients had to report to the company office for payment and transportation, which was inconvenient for those who needed care at home, and he figured there had to be a better way to do this.
How did you come up with the idea?
In Queretaro, Luis is a highly regarded doctor with strong connections with several insurance providers. In 2020, these companies began referring patients to him, and he turned to the MedGos platform to connect with these individuals. Initially, Luis treated these patients himself, but over time, he broadened his network of doctors on the MedGos platform and redirected some of these referrals to them. Through word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and acquaintances, Luis also received more patient referrals, significantly increasing appointments and consultations.
How did you acquire your first customers?
After hearing about his grandmother's situation and a nursing intern's experience in 2018-2019, Luis believed that an Uber for nurses should be a thing. As he pondered this idea, he realized that including doctors was also important. In his quest to discover if such a service already existed, he found MediQuo.
Luis became a doctor with MediQuo but experienced many logistical and administrative issues. These issues did not meet Luis's or his patients' expectations, and he eventually left the platform and decided to dedicate full-time to building MedGos.
What's your motivation?
Luis was inspired to create MedGos after witnessing his grandmother's struggles to receive proper care. The various appointments and services she needed, including medical checkups, psychological support, and nutritional advice, were difficult to access from home. This led Luis to develop the idea of bringing healthcare services directly to patients' homes, alleviating their challenges.
As MedGos has grown, Luis realized that many others face similar obstacles, such as mothers who cannot leave their homes due to their child's illness. These logistical challenges only add to the stress of caring for a sick loved one. A better solution is needed.
Surprisingly, despite the high demand for healthcare services, about 50% of general practitioners in Mexico are either unemployed or earn minimal income. According to a 2021 survey by INEGI, there are approximately 104,000 general practitioners in MX.
While the startup world often prioritizes speed and risk-taking, MedGos prioritizes patient safety and care. By bringing healthcare services directly to patients' homes, MedGos aims to revolutionize the healthcare industry and improve the lives of those in need.
