Networking
I’ve come across many definitions of networking, the benefits of taking action and leveraging from this powerful concept, and so forth. However, I never took the time to deconstruct the actual word.
-Net Working-
The word Net comes from the Latin word “nitere,” which means “to shine,” today could be associated with many things. It could be related to sports, another referred to textiles; it’s also a part of the construction of the famous word Internet, which we use daily.
But the one that fits most for this specific purpose is that of a tool that serves to catch.
Work, or the actual verb “working,” means using effort or action to produce or accomplish something.
So, combining them is what we get: the tool that catches the action to produce or accomplish something. But something critical is missing, a key element: the social component.
This is what truly matters.
Networking is not just about finding the right person to talk to and learn/receive from them. It’s genuinely understanding people’s needs and finding ways to help.
At first glance, networking involves building relationships. However, if we go deep (and you should). It’s about how to form a part of someone’s life, connect, cultivate, and grow so that it can become necessary to everyone involved.
Networking is about generosity. Sharing knowledge, time, energy, and friends and constantly providing value to others while coincidentally increasing your own.
I want to clarify that networking is not just about finding the right person to talk to and learn/receive from them. It’s genuinely understanding people’s needs and finding ways to help.
Reciprocity is the principle we seek here and the key to successful relationships.
They are built to last.
Those relationships you nurture, or encounter should not feel like a bargaining chip—quite the opposite. Stop counting, and please don’t ever feel it’s wrong to approach and ask someone because you have already done it.
Instead, think of ways you can be of service to make their life better. Is it an intro? Is it a new book you read that they need to read? Go ahead and make that gift. It could be a cup of coffee, a quick run, something to clear their headspace, or someone to bounce ideas with. Be there for them in any way possible.
There is always a small niche where you can be of service. Learn what it is and make it happen.
So, if you are considering starting a business, moving up in your career, or whatever it is you want. You need to truly take a moment and analyze what your networking strategy will look like ASAP.
Remember that business is a human enterprise driven and determined by people.
I will not be able to share everything I know about networking in just one article, and I don’t pretend to. This is the beginning of a series of articles related to this subject where the main objective is to share as much as I can about this and help you by any possible means, but most importantly, to learn from you.
Think about this simple formula for a second.
Success in life = People you meet + what you create together
It becomes a powerful subject and clear why it matters. There you go!
